Arthrogryposis and palatoschisis

The syndrome of arthrogryposis and palatoschisis (SAP) in Charolais

The calf affected with SAP has "rusty" joints and a cleft palate.

The calf cannot nurse and dies a few days after birth or may even be stillborn. This disease was quite frequent in the 1970s (0.5% of births) before an eradication plan was put in place based on testing data from young males. Today it is reappearing.
